CARMIGNANO
Wineries: Approx 12
Total square hectares: Around 120
Total production: Less than 1 MM bottles
In the period of the Etruscans, Carmignano was already producing wine.
The region was given its current input of Cabernet thanks to the Medici family who owned large parts of land in the area already 500 yrs ago.
The main grape variety is the red Sangiovese, but Canaiolo also plays are role in the blend, and so does the otherwise non-native Cabernet (Sauv or Franc). For the whites, Trebbiano and Malvasia are once again the favorites.
The most noteworthy wine is the Carmignano DOCG, a blend with primarily Sangiovese. Carmignano is a 2 yr old wine, 3 yrs for the Riserva. A younger red, Barco Reale, is also made. Also great dessert wine is made, Vin Santo, some whites (also macerated), and rosato (rosé).
