BOLGHERI
Wineries: Around 55
Total square hectares: Around 1150
Total production: Around 5 MM bottles
Bolgheri was not a wine-land until the soils got drained and some innovative thinkers started to plant vines. Since Sangiovese wasn't best suited to the area, the experiment of planting Bordeaux varieties happened. The first wine and vintage to put the area on the map was the 1968 Sassicaia - the bottled as a table wine.
Bolgheri is an opposit area of Tuscany. Only around 1% of the region is planted with the Tuscan Sangiovese grape. The grapes grown are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot & Syrah. For the whites, mainly Vermentino & Viognier.
The Bolgheri DOC was introduced as a consequence of the success of the region in producing high-quality wines. The Superiore version is usually the top wine of a winery, except of Sassicaia who exceptionally got a DOC all for itself and in use exclusively of the Tenuta San Guido winery.
